Carrie messaged JT first on OkCupid. She was still living in Manhattan but knew that she would be relocating to Philadelphia for work. She asked, “What is your favorite machine?” JT replied, “Real or imaginary?” “Both,” she said starting a lifelong conversation JT said, “The Enterprise if it is imaginary and bikes if it is real.” The two would go on to text for months while Carrie traveled before moving to West Philadelphia the part of town where JT has lived for over 15 years.

Their first date was a bike ride and bikes are a main character in their love story. From urban rides to mountain bikes and gravel events to traveling together exploring exciting routes they feel lucky that they are able to share their passion. JT showed Carrie what being a cyclist was about and she fell in love with living life on two wheels. From Keystone Gravel to Spirit World and Grinduro, the two have supported each other through exciting and difficult rides that have taught them both how to be better partners and people.

Many trips and vacations have punctuated their relationship. Their first big trip together was to Bar Harbour Maine where you guessed it they rode bikes. They have also visited Carrie’s closest friends in New York and taken in the sunset in Tucson Arizona. They’ve braved a torrential downpour while watching a mountain bike race in West Virginia, ripped through mountain bike trails at Raystown Lake, woken to a wild horse on their doorstep in Outer Banks, rode mopeds through the bayou in New Orleans, lazily sat on the beach in Florida, inhaled maple creamies after mountain biking in Vermont and enjoyed thousands of hours journeying through life together.

JT’s proposal was not a big surprise. They had already picked the wedding venue and signed the contract before he officially popped the question. The two were visiting JT’s parents who snowbird in Hutchinson Island, Florida. On a bike ride they pulled off on a long dock into a peaceful bay. JT waited for a fisherman to leave before getting down on one knee.
